Hard Rock Improv — OUT NOW!

Hard Rock Improv (The Lonely Kings, #3)

ARERose Alton had her future all planned out: excel at her career, find love, make a family and get rich. Then she got fired. Now after years of 90-hour work weeks she’s living out of her car and struggling to hold it together. Convinced she’ll turn it around any day now, keeping up appearances is her highest priority, but when Manny Reyes, her sister’s friend and drummer of the band The Lonely Kings, discovers her deception her secret is out… or so she thinks. To her surprise, Manny offers to keep her secret and invites her to Kauai, where he grew up and where the band is shooting their latest video. Rose hates to be anyone’s charity case, but with nowhere else to go and needing a vacation she reluctantly accepts and is whisked away to the island paradise. Rose soon discovers Manny isn’t like anyone she has ever met, rock star or not, Instead of preferring lavish hotels, fine dining, and parties until the break of dawn, when not on the set Manny prefers eating Spam, playing for change, and smoking out with the local hobos on the beach. But there’s a dark secret lurking on the island, one that plagues Manny, even when he’s on the other side of the ocean. As the heat between Rose and Manny builds, Rose begins to realize that there are some times when you need to break the rules…and that the only thing you can’t plan for is falling in love… Available Now for $2.99 at these major retailers: Amazon Barnes & Noble Kobo Books All Romance eBooks A note from Ava:  Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. An Update

In case anyone is wondering where I am, I am staring at an approximately 92% completed manuscript of Hard Rock Improv and this book has been giving me THE HARDEST TIME. I have been struggling to get it right for well over a month and a half now and I’m so close I can taste it, but the end keeps retreating like the horizon. It will be out. Soon. I’ve been slaving over it and trying to get it as good as can be… Incidentally, this is why I loved writing serials. When writing serials, there’s no time to agonize over whether or not it’s ~*perfect*~, but when dealing with full manuscripts the perfect is the enemy of the good, and the good is the enemy of the published.

I’m dragging myself toward the end. I like the book. But it doesn’t like me.

Excerpt:

I was finally sobering up by the time the sun started to set and the rest of the band, with attendant significant others, came stumbling through the front door.

“Jesus shit,” Carter said, alerting Sonya and me to their presence. I turned and looked over the back of the couch to see him stagger across the marbled entryway. He collapsed just at the border of the living room, his long legs stretched across the white tiles behind him, his arms outstretched, and his pretty, boyish face planted firmly against the floorboards as he closed his eyes and appeared to hug the beach house. A huge sigh escaped him. “I thought we would never get done.”

“We probably would have been done sooner if you hadn’t decided you wanted to get a new tattoo during lunch,” Kent said drily as he stepped over his brother’s limp body. “That sort of thing can put a kink in continuity, you know.”

“Continuity, schmontinuity,” Carter replied. “A video is for five hundred million hits on YouTube. A tattoo is forever.”

Next to me, Sonya scoffed. “YouTube will probably still be around after you’re dead and I sell your tattooed skin for a line of fine leather purses,” she said. “I’ll be rich.”

Carter turned one bloodshot eye toward her. “And old,” he said.

“And rich. Rich can buy a lot of young. Especially in the form of pool boys.”

Working on Rock the Wolf…

Has grown a bit bigger than I anticipated. Short novel sized. 50k words at least. *sigh* This always happens to me. I have another novella due in November… I’m not quite sure how long THAT one will be. Hopefully short. Then Hard Rock Improv should come out in late December.

In the meantime, because of the Rock Star Romance boxed set, this happened:

Yup. NYT and USA Today, bitches. Will post some RtW teasers later tonight or tomorrow.

THE WIN BOOKS AND MONEY CONTEST!

…Or at least that’s what I’m calling it! Mash this here graphic to enter the giveaway and get 25 ebooks and fifty bucks! I mean… thank God for the internet. If it had been around in its current form when I was in high school I would have flunked out of all my classes because I spent all my time on the internet trying to win free books. MMMmmmm… books. What was I saying? Oh yeah, ENTER BELOW!

Refractory period…and a thank you.

For me as an author, the hardest time is after I’ve finished a book and it’s out in the world and I want to get started on the next book but I can’t. Because my brain needs to rest. And I need to read. Reading is critical. My thinkmeats have to recover from spitting out all those words. I call it “refilling the wordbank.” Here are the books I have lined up for the next couple of days to read. Yeah, you can tell I went a little nuts at the bookstore. Already finished up Entice an Enchantress. It was lovely. Working on The School for Good and Evil right now, and liking it very much. As you can see not so much on the heavy reading, very much on brain candy. I love you, brain candy. You make life so much nicer. 🙂 In book news, I’m letting Manny and his match sit on the backburner for a week or so. I’ve been asked to join in another rock anthology, so I’ll be whipping up a novella for that before starting on Hard Rock Improv… And I have the most delicious and delightful tickling idea for a long, long new adult urban fantasy paranormal romance series, but right now this is what my brainstorming page looks like for it: imbadatplanning Yeah. In case you can’t read my handwriting (FUN FACT: the handwriting font used on the “Rock Arrangement” series covers was a custom font from my own handwriting, lol) the word is “psychopomp.” I don’t even have a title for the first book. I always have a title. That one should probably percolate a little more. …And Hard Rock Remix is selling very well. I really don’t know what to say when that happens, except thank you. To write books and tell stories has always been my dream, and you make it possible. Everything is possible because of you, and I don’t know how to thank you for it. So. I’ll just keep trying to write good books, and I hope you keep enjoying them and sharing them with anyone you think might like them, too.

Hard Rock Remix now available at Barnes & Noble!

Hard Rock Remix (The Lonely Kings, #2)

hard rock remixA damsel in distress… The day of a young woman’s wedding should be the happiest day of her life, but for Aylen Ware, it is the worst. Raised from a young age in a secret splinter sect of the Fundamentalist Mormon Church, Aylen has spent her life suppressing her true self and living in constant fear of violence and abuse. The Elders of the church claim that she has been chosen to be the eighteenth bride of a man three times her age and renowned for his cruelty, but Aylen has other ideas. Mere minutes before her wedding, she runs, knowing that she will fail in her flight unless she can find someone to help her… An unlikely prince… Half-naked and passed out drunk on a motel bed, Carter Hudson doesn’t seem like a knight in shining armor. Covered in tattoos and piercings, and distinctly disheveled, he frightens Aylen more than a little bit… but appearances can be deceiving. As Aylen runs with Carter’s help, she discovers that beneath the rough surface is a scarred young man who has had his own curses and triumphs–and that he is full of surprises. Like his music. And his money. And his fame. Oh…and also his internationally acclaimed rock band. Still, as the two grow closer Aylen discovers they are more alike than not, and finds her feelings for him changing from the wary…to the wicked. A fairy tale ending…? But Aylen’s past will not let go easily: men from the Church are tracking her, determined to take her back to the cult and a life of misery and servitude. Will the bond between her and Carter be enough to escape the evil that follows her, or is her curse so strong that not even love can defeat it? Hard Rock Remix is a stand-alone novel of 94,000 words and is the second in the series The Lonely Kings.

This story grabbed me and wouldn’t let go until I had told it to the best of my ability, and that was a long, hard road. I hope you enjoy it, and look forward to more books in this series and others coming soon! Manny’s story is up next in the Lonely Kings saga, and I am quite excited about putting my favorite happy-go-lucky drummer up against his match in the upcoming Hard Rock Improv. All the best, Ava Lore
